“What if what truly allows us to thrive as human beings—what makes us fundamentally human—is our capacity for civility, and our commitment to protect that civility with fierceness? What if, even in the face of bullying, aggression, and a world system that often rewards cruelty and division, we choose instead to stand firm, grounded, and fierce in our civility?” — Joe Weston
Join me and my guest, Joe Weston, for an important and deeply relevant conversation about what it means to be fiercely civil and why this concept is increasingly essential in today’s rapidly polarizing world. Throughout our discussion, Joe offers insight into how Fierce Civility provides both a framework and a set of embodied practices that empower us to meet conflict with clarity, compassion, and strength.
Our conversation spans Joe’s lifelong engagement with meditation, martial arts, Taoist principles, and a wide range of cultural and spiritual traditions. These disciplines have shaped the unique body of work he brings into corporations, governments, NGOs, and community organizations worldwide. Joe explains how these influences have led him to develop his approach to respectful confrontation—a core component of Fierce Civility—which gives us tools to move beyond the instinctive biological, cultural, and tribal survival impulses that often push us into separation, defensiveness, and disconnection.
Joe guides us through strategies for releasing the gridlock created by extreme polarization, helping us understand how we can shift from conflict to collaboration, from division to bridging, and from fear to alliance-building. He emphasizes that even in moments of turmoil or deep disagreement, it is possible to create new solutions and unexpected pathways forward when we engage with courage, curiosity, and grounded presence.
In 2020, Joe founded the Fierce Civility Project, a global initiative created to support those who want to transform their innovative, passionate visions for a more equitable and sustainable world into practical, effective action. The project provides training, resources, and community for individuals and organizations committed to building cultures centered on connection, accountability, and empowered leadership.
