Practice 7: Community – The Final Step Toward Lasting Peace

7 Practices for Lasting Peace

Today, I’m sharing the seventh and final practice in the 7 Practices for Lasting Peace: Community.

In a world facing heightened tensions—from current events in the U.S. to conflicts across Europe and beyond—the need for connection, belonging, and support feels more urgent than ever.

Why Community Matters

We began this journey with practices focused on the self—Inner Peace, Personal Philosophy, and Courageous Self-Reflection. Then, we explored ways to foster authentic connection with others—Understanding, Engagement, and Helping Hand.

Now, we come full circle with Community. True lasting peace isn’t something we cultivate alone; it flourishes through our authentic connections with others.

Building community means seeking out individuals and groups that align with your values and personal philosophy. It’s about nurturing connections that strengthen your sense of purpose and belonging, and finding shared values that can ground you during turbulent times.

What Authentic Community Looks Like

Community is where we grow, challenge, and uplift one another. It’s where we create a collective resilience, a shared commitment to peace, and a powerful network of mutual empowerment.

Here’s the beauty of authentic community:

  • It transcends differences in backgrounds, ethnicities, races, genders, socio-economic status, and even nations.
  • It rests on universal values like respect, dignity, belonging, freedom, and cooperation.

The Path to Lasting Peace

In my work with leaders, teams, and global peace initiatives, I’ve seen that lasting peace begins with creating environments of safety and trust.

As I outline in Fierce Civility, achieving lasting peace and the emergence of new solutions requires:

  1. Breaking through internal polarities, biases, and judgments that block our ability to connect.
  2. Healing and reconciliation that repair and strengthen relationships.
  3. Establishing clear protocols for communication and co-creation that work for everyone involved.

Whether working with companies, couples, or communities, the first step is always the same: helping people move out of their fight-flight-freeze response and back to their hearts. Only then can we begin to co-create inclusive, resilient, and collaborative solutions.

While this may seem daunting in our hyper-polarized world, it is far from impossible.

Heart Community

Authentic community is “Heart” community. It’s not about chronic niceness or avoiding tension—it’s about fierce commitment. It’s about understanding, engaging, and helping one another, especially during difficult times.

When people feel part of something dynamic and skillful, they experience greater confidence, belonging, and purpose.

Your Invitation

This week, take time to reflect on what community means to you.

  • Who do you acknowledge as your community?
  • How can you make a commitment to deepen and nurture those connections?
  • Are you actively contributing to your community, or are you holding back?

Steps to Build and Strengthen Your Community

  • Connect with individuals who share your vision for peace.
  • Engage meaningfully with friends, family, or colleagues.
  • Join a local group or online community that inspires you.
  • Be a safe, supportive presence for others.

Consider reaching out to people who may see the world differently than you. Explore what it might take to find common ground, expanding your sense of community and connection.

Together, we can undivide the world and create spaces of belonging, safety, and peace for everyone.

Let’s walk this path together, building communities that empower and inspire us to be our best selves.

With heart,
Joe
